Hair is made of protein. Specifically keratin, a fibrous structural protein that forms the hair shaft. Every time you heat style, chemically process, color, or even just wash and manipulate your hair, you create small amounts of damage to that protein structure. The protein in your deep conditioners and treatments helps repair and strengthen the hair temporarily. But here's what most people get wrong: protein without moisture makes hair hard, brittle, and prone to snapping. And too much moisture without protein leaves hair soft, weak, and stretchy before it breaks.

Balance between the two is what healthy hair requires.

How to Read Your Hair

Take a wet strand of hair and gently stretch it. Healthy hair should stretch about 30% of its length and spring back without breaking. This is what a balanced protein-moisture level looks like.

If the strand snaps immediately with little stretch: moisture deficiency. Your hair is too protein-heavy or simply too dry. It needs water-based products and deep conditioning focused on moisture.

If the strand stretches a lot and then breaks, or feels mushy and doesn't spring back: protein deficiency. The structure of the hair shaft has been compromised. It needs protein treatments to rebuild strength.

Moisture-Deficient Hair

Moisture-deficient hair feels rough, snaps when dry, and breaks when you try to manipulate it. It often lacks elasticity. Running your fingers through it, you can feel roughness or hear snapping sounds.

What it needs: more frequent deep conditioning with moisture-focused treatments (look for humectants like aloe vera, glycerin, honey in the ingredients), proper LOC layering on wash day, and avoiding or reducing protein treatments until moisture is restored.

Protein-Deficient Hair

Protein-deficient hair feels soft but weak. It may feel gummy or mushy when wet. It stretches far before breaking. It often lacks definition and may feel limp. This is common in hair that's been chemically processed, heat styled frequently, or that has high porosity with a lot of damaged cuticles.

What it needs: a protein treatment followed by deep conditioning with moisture. Never protein alone: moisture must follow to prevent overloading to the other side. Light protein treatments: products containing hydrolyzed wheat protein, silk amino acids, or rice protein. Stronger treatments: eggs, gelatin, or dedicated protein packs.

The Sequence That Fixes Imbalance

If your hair is protein-deficient: protein treatment, then immediately deep condition with moisture. One step then the other, in the same wash session. Don't skip the moisture step after protein.

If your hair is moisture-deficient: clarify to remove any buildup that's blocking absorption, then do a moisture-only deep conditioning session. Skip protein entirely for a few wash days until the moisture level feels restored.

Maintenance Is the Goal

Most coily hair doesn't need weekly protein treatments. A moisture-focused deep conditioner every week and a light protein treatment every four to six weeks is a good baseline for healthy, undamaged natural hair. More protein is warranted after chemical treatments, significant heat use, or if you notice consistent breakage or lack of elasticity.

The stretch test is your check-in. Do it every few weeks and let your hair tell you what it needs.
