Welcome Coco: for parents

What Coilhood gives you

A system, not a spiral of YouTube videos.

Most parents searching for help end up overwhelmed, lectured, or told they should have known this already. Coilhood is built differently. Coco starts where you are: no hair knowledge required.

Ask Coco Anything

Her hair is dry by Tuesday. The detangler isn't working. She cried during brushing. Ask Coco. She will give you a direct, specific answer.

The glossary

10 terms every parent needs to know.

These come up in every wash day, every product search, and every Coco video. Learn these first and everything else makes sense faster.

Porosity

How easily your child's hair absorbs and holds moisture. Low porosity = hard to get moisture in. High porosity = easy in, hard to keep. It matters more than hair type.

LOC Method

The order you apply products: Liquid (water or leave-in), Oil, then Cream. This layering traps moisture so it lasts longer. Most parents apply these in the wrong order.

Shrinkage

Coily hair can appear much shorter when dry than when wet. This is healthy. It means the hair has strong elasticity. It is not breakage. It is not a problem to fix.

Co-washing

Washing hair with conditioner instead of shampoo. This cleans gently without stripping the natural oils that coily hair needs to stay moisturized. Good for weekly washes.

Detangling

Always done on wet, conditioned hair. Always starting from the ends and working up to the roots. Never on dry hair. Never with a fine-tooth comb on 4c curls.

Protective Style

A style that tucks the ends of the hair away so they don't rub on clothing and break off. Braids, twists, buns, and cornrows all qualify. They're not just cute. They protect growth.

Deep Conditioning

A thicker conditioner left on for 20โ€“45 minutes (often under a shower cap) to deeply hydrate and strengthen the hair shaft. More important for coils than for any other hair type.

Scalp Health

Healthy hair grows from a healthy scalp. Buildup, dryness, and tension on the scalp affect growth. Light oil massages, careful parts, and loose styles keep the scalp happy.

Wash Day

The dedicated day (usually weekly) when you do the full wash, condition, detangle, and style routine. For most families with coily hair, this takes 1โ€“3 hours depending on hair length.

Hair Type (4a/4b/4c)

The Andre Walker system. 4a has defined S-shaped coils. 4b has tighter Z-shaped kinks. 4c has the tightest coils with very little visible curl pattern. Most kids have a mix of types.

Wash Day Coco with comb and spray bottle

Wash day, simplified

Your first wash day, step by step.

These are the basics. Coilhood's full system walks you through every variation: different hair types, different ages, different styles.

1

Detangle before washing

Use a wide-tooth comb or fingers. Apply a detangler or conditioner first. Work in sections from ends to roots. Never dry detangle.

2

Wash gently

Sulfate-free shampoo or co-wash. Focus on the scalp, not the strands. Squeeze, don't scrub. Rinse thoroughly.

3

Deep condition

Apply a thick conditioner from mid-shaft to ends. Cover with a shower cap. Leave 20โ€“30 minutes. This step is the most skipped and the most important.

4

Apply products while wet

LOC order: leave-in conditioner, then oil, then cream. Work in sections. Do not let the hair air-dry before applying.

5

Style and protect

Choose a protective style that holds through the week. Braid-outs, twists, and puffs all work. Cover with a satin bonnet at bedtime.
