Hard water is tap water with high concentrations of dissolved minerals: primarily calcium and magnesium. About 85% of households in the United States have hard water to some degree. It doesn't taste different from soft water, it doesn't look different, and most people have no idea their water quality is affecting their hair until they move somewhere with dramatically different water and notice their routine behaving differently.

What Hard Water Does to Coily Hair

Every time you wash your hair with hard water, calcium and magnesium ions deposit on the hair shaft. They bond to the proteins in your hair and create a film. This film has two main effects: it makes the cuticle rougher, which creates more friction and more frizz, and it blocks absorption so that your deep conditioners, leave-ins, and moisturizers sit on top of the mineral coating instead of penetrating the hair shaft.

Over weeks and months, the buildup becomes significant. Products that used to work stop working. Deep conditioning seems pointless. Hair feels rough even right after washing. If this trajectory sounds familiar and you haven't changed your products or routine, hard water is almost certainly part of the picture.

How to Know If You Have Hard Water

The most obvious signs: white mineral deposits around your faucets, showerhead, or on dishes after they dry. Soap that doesn't lather well. Hair that feels rough and resistant after washing even when you've been consistent with your routine.

You can test your water hardness with an inexpensive strip test available at home improvement stores. Over 120 mg/L of calcium carbonate is considered hard water.

Solutions That Actually Work

A chelating shampoo removes mineral deposits that regular clarifying shampoo leaves behind. Chelating shampoos contain EDTA or citric acid, which bind to metal ions and rinse them away. Use once a month if you have hard water, or every two to three weeks if your water is very hard.

An apple cider vinegar (ACV) rinse after shampooing helps remove mineral deposits and restores the hair's pH. Mix one part ACV with three to four parts water, apply after shampooing, leave for two to three minutes, and rinse. Use before deep conditioning, not after.

A showerhead filter with KDF-55 media or calcium sulfite reduces the mineral content of the water as it comes out. These range from $30 to $80 and change the wash day experience significantly for hard water households. Filters need to be replaced every three to six months.

If You Travel

Traveling to a city with harder or softer water than you're used to can make your routine behave unexpectedly. If products suddenly perform differently on a trip, the water is likely the variable. Pack a small bottle of ACV rinse for travel.
