You sit down in the chair and the stylist asks what you want done today. You know your hair has porosity issues, protein sensitivity, edge thinning you're trying to protect, and a specific texture at the nape that behaves differently from the rest of your head. Getting all of that communicated accurately while someone is already reaching for a comb is nearly impossible.

The better approach is to prepare it in advance and hand it over.

What Every Stylist Should Know Before They Start

Your hair type and texture: specifically which sections are which if they vary. A stylist who doesn't know your texture will make assumptions. If your nape is 4A and your crown is 4C, that matters for technique and product choice.

Your porosity. High-porosity hair and low-porosity hair have different needs during detangling, conditioning, and drying. A stylist who knows your porosity can adjust their approach accordingly.

Your goals. Are you trying to retain length? Protect edges that are already thinning? Avoid all heat? Growing out color-damaged sections? Your goal determines what a good outcome looks like, and a stylist who doesn't know the goal can't help you achieve it.

What you absolutely do not want done. No high heat without prior consent. No fine-tooth comb. No tight braiding near the hairline. Whatever your non-negotiables are, state them clearly before anything starts.

Any sensitivities. Scalp conditions, product allergies, ingredients you avoid, or areas where you experience pain with tension.
