Protective styles
Log your protective styles, set takedown reminders, and track how each style performs for your length retention over time.
Protective style rules
Maximum 6 to 8 weeks. After 8 weeks, new growth causes tension at the root and matting begins. Takedown after 6 is the sweet spot for most textures.
3 to 4 weeks maximum. These styles allow the scalp to breathe but new growth tangles around the base more quickly than braids.
4 to 6 weeks. The synthetic hair in these styles holds moisture against the scalp, which can lead to bacterial growth at the root if worn too long.
Take off weekly to care for the hair and scalp underneath. Deep condition your natural hair every time the wig comes off.
Scalp pain, itching that won't stop, bumps on the scalp, visible irritation at the hairline, or hair that feels tight when you move your head: these are all "take it down now" signals.
Give your natural hair 1 to 2 weeks to breathe between protective sets. Deep condition, moisture, and let the scalp reset. This is not optional for long-term retention.
