Before you book
These questions separate stylists who understand coily hair from those who will guess. Ask every one of them. A stylist who knows coily hair will answer confidently.
The right answer names specific techniques, styles they specialize in, or client types they regularly see. A vague "I work on all hair types" is not the answer you want.
Any stylist who applies heat to natural coily hair without explicit permission first is not the right fit. You should always be asked before any heat tool comes near your hair.
The answer should include: wet or well-conditioned hair only, starting at the ends, working in sections. If they say "I detangle dry": leave.
You have the right to know every product going on your hair. A good stylist will welcome this conversation, not deflect it.
Every professional stylist has a portfolio. If the portfolio is mostly relaxed or straightened styles, that's their comfort zone: not yours.
Any natural hair specialist worth booking does a consultation first. It's where they assess your hair, listen to your goals, and tell you what they can and can't do. No consultation is a red flag.
Know this before you sit down. A professional will have a clear answer. Someone who deflects this question is telling you how they handle problems.
Red flags
If a flat iron or blow-dryer comes out before you've talked about heat, stand up and leave. Natural hair management never requires heat as a default.
Coily hair should only be detangled on wet, conditioned hair. A stylist who starts on dry hair without rewetting is going to cause breakage.
If you say you're worried about your edges and they redirect you to a style choice, they've told you your concerns are not their priority.
Coily hair is not unmanageable. It requires specific knowledge and technique. A stylist who uses this language doesn't have those skills.
You came for natural hair care. Any suggestion of chemical processing without your explicit request, and ideally your own research first, is inappropriate.
Going straight to the shampoo bowl or styling chair without a conversation about your hair, history, and goals is a sign they're not invested in your specific results.
