Glycerin is a humectant. It attracts water from the air to the hair. In the right conditions, this is excellent: glycerin keeps the hair shaft moisturized between wash days by pulling atmospheric moisture in. But the same property that makes glycerin so useful in dry conditions makes it a liability in high humidity. Understanding this explains why a routine that works perfectly in February can completely fall apart in July.

How Glycerin Works

A humectant draws water toward itself. When you apply a glycerin-containing product to your hair, the glycerin is trying to pull water from two directions: from inside the hair shaft (keeping hair moisturized) and from the air around the hair (adding moisture from the atmosphere). When the air has moderate humidity, not too dry, not too wet, this works beautifully. The hair stays moisturized and the style holds.

What Happens in High Humidity

When the air is very humid (above 70 to 80 percent relative humidity), glycerin draws enormous amounts of moisture from the atmosphere into the hair. This swells the hair shaft, opens the cuticle, and creates frizz, puffiness, and loss of definition. A twist-out that lasted three days in a drier month collapses within an hour in August because the glycerin in the styling products is actively pulling humidity into the hair.

What Happens in Very Dry Conditions

The reverse problem occurs in very dry air: less than 20 to 30 percent relative humidity, which happens in winter in many climates or in heated indoor air. When there's very little moisture in the air, glycerin has nothing to pull from the atmosphere. Instead, it draws moisture out of the hair shaft itself, pulling the hair's internal moisture toward the outside, where it evaporates. The result is hair that gets drier faster despite glycerin-rich products.

How to Manage This Seasonally

In humid months: reduce or eliminate high-glycerin products from your wash day routine. Look for products that list glycerin further down the ingredient list, or switch to products that don't contain it. Use more anti-humidity products: those containing PVP, carbomer, or other film-forming polymers that seal the cuticle rather than drawing moisture in.

In dry months: glycerin is your friend. Products with glycerin near the top of the ingredient list are excellent at pulling moisture from the relatively dry air into your hair shaft. Pair with a heavier sealant to keep what the glycerin attracted from immediately evaporating.
